During alcohol prohibition, physicians, about $4 cash would give a patient a liquor prescription. This “prescription” was taken mostly to Walgreens and was filled. The quantity and type of liquor would be specified and a beautiful prescription (above) was generated.
During prohibition Walgreens grew a LOT. However, after prohibition, as newer and greater numbers of pills and capsules were being created by pharma, the ultimate profits would be much greater. Perhaps, I have mused in the past, is why pharmacies so frequently sell booze??
